Joseph Slichko

Joe Slichko is a math teacher turned administrator who has worked in various leadership roles in diverse locations over the past 15 years. In addition to teaching middle and high school mathematics, Joe was a Catholic School Elementary principal for 5 years before transitioning to public school education. Joe began his work as High School Assistant Principal at Schenectady City School District, and now is the Assistant Principal at Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School.

Supporting Students with Trauma in Your Classroom

Childhood adversity, toxic stress, and trauma can negatively impact students’ ability to thrive in school, at home, and throughout life.” The objective of this course is to begin creating discussion on how to best support students and families through an increased knowledge of trauma sensitivity and to recognize how trauma can present itself in all students from all backgrounds. Utilizing Google Classroom, participants will will gain a working knowledge of the struggles that many of our students experience. Participants will collaboratively engage with interactive case studies, videos and reflecting on shared experiences. Participants will leave with a personalized action plan for creating a more trauma sensitive space (classroom/office) as well as a plan for self care.

Joe will also be passing out copies of Jessica Sinarski's Riley the Brave. This book is the perfect addition to trauma-informed classroom. Beyond being a picture book that kids love to read, Riley the Brave empowers and encourages caring adults. It has been used by parents, educators, and health professionals treating ADHD, PTSD, and other aftermath of childhood trauma. Free lesson plans and activities are available at rileythebrave.org.
